Air Zimbabwe is one the finest Airlines of Africa and has been in service for a long time. But the company has a very interesting past which in itself is a one of a kind journey.
Air Zimbabwe Brief History
Air Zimbabwe was first founded on 1st September 1967 by the name of Air Rhodesia but finally got its original name of Air Zimbabwe in April of 1980 when the Republic of Zimbabwe was formed. This government owned cooperation started its journey with only five Boeing 707′s. And with the passage of time gradually Air Zimbabwe increased their fleet and regional flights. Moreover the airline became popular in London for traveling to Harare. It started its tour to Beijing on November of 2004. But during the time between 1999 and 2005 the passenger count decreased sharply. The acting CEO at that time put forth the statement that it is all because of the political and economical de-stability of the country and moreover some really bad publicity. In October 2006 its prices increased almost five times and the Airline was in great trouble. Moreover the Zimbabwean Central Bank also refused to help the Airline in the time of crisis and this was a major blow to the Airline. Nevertheless Air Zimbabwe increased its London flights to five flights a week and also paced up its regional flights. Working day in and day out the hard work finally paid off when British Airways halted its direct flights to Harare and Air Zimbabwe again came up victorious.
Air Zimbabwe False Public Portrayal
However Air Zimbabwe’s popularity was greatly affected by the bad publicities and false reports. One such event was when a freelance reporter of the famous Chicago tribunes of America published news in which she described her own experience of the Air Zimbabwe flight as if the pilot was Johnny English!!! This news was however false but remained in the air for a long time. Even though the newspaper and the reporter were sued and charged heavily but the damage had been done… In other news CNN gave a report exclaiming that Air Zimbabwe is the most dangerous Airline to travel with, however this report was mistaken for another Airline (Egypt Air).
But the statistics show otherwise. Air Zimbabwe had only 2 fatal incidents in which a passenger carrying Airplane was shot down during the 1970’s war of the Rhodesian Bush war. And I haven’t come across any other such incident. Frankly speaking I thing Air Zim is the safest Airline to travel with.
Despite all the troubles this Airline has gone through, today it has a handsome share of some world famous destinations and covers almost all of Africa, also touching destination such as Beijing, Malaysia, the UAE and the United-Kingdom it has proven to be a very successful Airline in recent times. The Airline has taken a leap in it’s technical development and mechanical maintenance and is on a verge of excellence.
